What Happens After a Suspected DUI Crash Causes Serious Injuries?
When a driver is suspected of being under the influence after a serious roadway crash, investigators typically gather evidence from several sources. This may include witness statements, vehicle positions, roadway markings, surveillance footage, and chemical testing when permitted by law. Officers also document damage to the vehicles and other physical evidence that may help explain how the sequence of events unfolded.
Medical findings can also help clarify the extent of harm to the people involved, particularly in cases requiring trauma care. As additional evidence is reviewed, investigators may determine whether impairment, speeding, distraction, or other factors contributed to what happened. It can take days or even weeks for all findings to be completed and for any related criminal or traffic proceedings to move forward.
