Los Angeles, CA (August 12, 2026) — A Honda Accord and an SUV, later identified as a white Hyundai Palisade, collided on Monday, August 10, evening on westbound State Route 118 at Reseda Boulevard in Los Angeles, blocking the HOV lane and the first lane, according to dispatch records.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles, dispatch information shows. The Honda Accord had major front-end damage and needed to be towed.

Additional lanes were temporarily held while a freeway service patrol responded, according to dispatch records. The extent of any injuries has not been confirmed.

The cause of the wreck remained unclear as this report was filed.

We hope that any injured victim as a result of this accident gets a full recovery.

What It Means When Airbags Deploy in Both Vehicles

When airbags deploy in both vehicles during a hard hit, it generally means each vehicle’s own sensors independently detected enough sudden deceleration to trigger the system. Since airbags are designed to activate only above a certain force threshold, simultaneous deployment in two separate vehicles is usually a sign that both experienced a fairly significant impact rather than a minor bump.

Deployment doesn’t automatically mean occupants walked away unharmed, though. Airbags are built to reduce certain types of injury, particularly to the head and chest, but they can’t prevent every kind of harm, especially in hits involving higher speeds or unusual angles that the system wasn’t primarily designed around.

Once an airbag deploys, the vehicle typically requires significant repairs before it’s safe to drive again, including replacing the airbag itself, related sensors, and any steering wheel or dashboard components involved. This cost is one reason insurers frequently total a vehicle after an airbag deploys, even when the visible body damage doesn’t appear severe enough to justify it at first glance.
