Clear Creek, CO (August 12, 2026) – Three people were injured on Monday, August 10, in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 70 east of the Eisenhower Tunnel. The crash occurred shortly after 10:45 a.m.
A K9 trooper had been parked on the eastbound shoulder when he activated his emergency lights and began turning left across both travel lanes. A Subaru Forester traveling in the left lane struck the driver’s side of the patrol car.
Both vehicles then crossed the center median and hit a Chevrolet work truck and a GMC Sierra in the westbound lanes. The trooper was flown to a hospital for evaluation and was expected to recover.
An elderly couple inside the Subaru were also taken to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity. The two pickup drivers were not hurt. The K9 was taken for a precautionary veterinary examination. Authorities continue reviewing the accident to determine the complete sequence of events.

Why Cross-Median Crashes Can Involve Several Vehicles
A strong initial impact can change a vehicle’s direction and carry it away from its original lane. If the center median is narrow or passable, damaged vehicles may enter traffic moving the opposite way.
Drivers in those lanes can have very little time to react to vehicles suddenly crossing into their path. Additional contact may occur within seconds, creating several points of impact.
Travel speed, median design, vehicle position, and the direction of the first strike can influence the outcome. Medical evaluations may identify head, neck, chest, back, or limb trauma after repeated impacts, even when some injuries are not immediately visible.
