Chincoteague, VA (June 7, 2026) – A 25-year-old man lost his life after two vehicles struck each other head-on along Route 175 Causeway late on Friday night. The Ford Explorer then left the roadway, went over a barrier, and came to rest in a marsh. The driver of the Explorer, identified as 25-year-old Tyler Crockett of New Church, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Camry driver was taken to a hospital and reported to have minor injuries. The Camry operator’s identity has not been released.
Police say the roadway was shut down for several hours overnight before reopening early Saturday morning. No additional details have been released regarding contributing factors.
Officials say the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the event is ongoing. Our condolences go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
What Drivers Should Know About Head-on Roadway Situations on Two-Lane Highways
Head-on collisions on two-lane highways often occur when a vehicle drifts across the center line or enters the wrong lane. These moments can unfold quickly and leave little time for reaction, especially on higher-speed roads like rural routes or causeways.
Road design, lighting conditions, and driver alertness can all influence how these events occur. Oncoming traffic may have limited space to avoid a direct path once traffic in both directions is affected.
Vehicle damage and roadside positions are often reviewed to help explain movement before and after contact. In many cases, investigators also look at lane markings, visibility, and weather conditions.
Because these roadways carry traffic in opposite directions without full separation, even a brief lane deviation can result in severe consequences for those involved.
