Granite City, IL (September 14, 2026) – Three people were killed on Saturday, September 12, after an erratically driven vehicle crashed into another vehicle in Granite City.

According to the Granite City Police Department, officers observed a vehicle traveling erratically westbound on Pontoon Road at Maryville Road around 4:21 p.m. Before officers could make contact with the vehicle, it struck another vehicle at the intersection of Pontoon Road and Wabash Road.

Three people died as a result of the crash. Granite City police requested assistance from Illinois State Police with the investigation. Additional information was not immediately available.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of the three people who lost their lives in this tragic crash. We hope they find comfort and support as they cope with this difficult loss.

How Can Erratic Driving Increase the Risk of a Deadly Crash?

Erratic driving can make it difficult for other motorists to predict what a vehicle will do next. Sudden lane changes, drifting, inconsistent speeds, and unexpected turns can leave nearby drivers with little time to react. Maintaining extra following distance can provide more time to respond when another vehicle is moving unpredictably.

Drivers should remain alert when they notice a vehicle behaving unusually. Rather than attempting to pass closely or confront the driver, motorists can create additional space and avoid staying alongside the vehicle. Reducing speed and keeping a clear path for an evasive maneuver may also help when traffic conditions change suddenly.

Intersections can make unpredictable driving especially dangerous because several vehicles may be approaching from different directions. Drivers should scan carefully before entering an intersection and remain prepared for another vehicle to disregard normal traffic patterns. Staying focused on the roadway and avoiding distractions can improve a driver’s ability to recognize hazards early.
