Mettawa, IL (July 8, 2026) – A 43-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 60 and Saint Mary’s Road in Mettawa. Emergency units were called to the intersection at about 8:50 p.m. on Monday, July 6, after reports of a motorcycle rider who was unconscious and not breathing. Lifesaving efforts began immediately, but the Mundelein man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to preliminary findings, the motorcycle was traveling westbound on Route 60 with a green traffic signal. At the same time, a 2024 Chevrolet Trax traveling eastbound turned left onto northbound Saint Mary’s Road in front of the motorcycle. The rider was unable to avoid the collision and struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet.

The force of the collision threw the rider from the motorcycle, which then continued forward and hit a Hyundai SUV waiting on Saint Mary’s Road. None of the three people inside the Hyundai was hurt. The 55-year-old Waukegan woman driving the Chevrolet was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. She is cooperating with investigators.

The motorcyclist’s identity has not yet been released as the coroner’s office completes its procedures. The intersection remained closed for several hours while crews worked on the roadway.

The cause of the crash is being examined, and additional information may be released as the review progresses.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the man’s family and everyone affected by this tragic loss.

Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes Can Be So Severe

Motorcycles are especially vulnerable when another vehicle turns left across their path. Because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, they can be harder for turning drivers to judge, particularly at busy intersections or during changing light conditions. Even when a rider has the right of way, there may be very little time or distance available to avoid a vehicle that suddenly enters the travel lane.

After a serious motorcycle collision, investigators usually review traffic signal timing, vehicle positions, witness statements, roadway markings, and physical evidence such as skid marks and debris patterns. Damage to each vehicle may also help explain how the sequence unfolded. Medical findings, surveillance footage, and onboard vehicle data, when available, can provide additional details that contribute to a clearer understanding of what occurred.
