Southold, NY (July 8, 2026) – Two drivers were hurt in a two-vehicle crash on County Route 48 at Tuckers Lane in Southold on Monday, July 6. A 77-year-old man driving a Porsche pulled out from Tuckers Lane and failed to yield to a 39-year-old woman driving a Bronco eastbound on Route 48, resulting in the collision.

The man had to be extricated from his vehicle before being taken to an area hospital. The woman was also transported for treatment. The extent of both drivers’ injuries was not immediately known following the wreck.

Route 48 was closed during the investigation but reopened by Monday afternoon. No passengers were present in either vehicle at the time of the accident.

The crash remains under active review. We hope both drivers make full recoveries.

What Happens When a Driver Fails to Yield at a Rural Intersection?

Failure to yield when pulling out from a side road onto a busier route is one of the most common causes of serious intersection crashes. A driver emerging from a smaller road must judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic accurately before proceeding, and an error in that judgment can leave little time for the oncoming vehicle to brake or maneuver. On routes where traffic moves at higher speeds, even a brief miscalculation can result in a significant collision.

Extrication following a crash at an intersection is necessary when the front or side of a vehicle sustains heavy structural damage. The Porsche’s lower profile compared to a larger SUV like a Bronco can make the occupant more vulnerable to intrusion from a side or front impact, potentially trapping the driver inside. Rescue crews quickly assess the situation and choose the safest approach to removing the occupant without worsening any injuries.

Older drivers involved in intersection crashes may face longer recovery times due to age-related differences in how the body responds to trauma. Medical teams take age into account when evaluating and planning treatment for crash victims, since some injuries that appear minor initially can become more significant in older patients over the hours following a collision.
