Superior Twp, MI (July 29, 2026) – A 6-year-old boy died after the minibike he was riding with another child struck a parked vehicle in the 8600 block of MacArthur Boulevard, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office. Rescue crews were called around 6:05 p.m. Sunday, July 26.
Both boys, ages 6 and 10, were taken to an area hospital. The 6-year-old died from his injuries. The 10-year-old suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing. Our condolences go out to the boy’s family and loved ones.
Why Are Minibikes Risky for Young Riders?
Minibikes are smaller and lighter than standard motorcycles, but they still travel fast enough to cause serious harm in a crash, especially for a young rider without much experience judging speed and stopping distance. A child’s smaller size also means less natural protection if a collision happens.
Riding with a passenger changes how a minibike handles further, since the extra weight shifts balance and can make it harder to stop quickly or steer around an obstacle. Two children sharing one bike means less stability than either would have riding alone.
Because minibikes are frequently used in driveways, yards, or quiet streets, young riders may not always anticipate hazards like a parked car, especially at higher speeds or in areas with limited visibility. Adult supervision and clear boundaries on where a minibike can be ridden are commonly recommended to help reduce this kind of risk.
