Chester Twp, OH (December 4, 2026) – Emergency responders from New Pittsburgh Fire and EMS rushed to the scene Friday afternoon following a tragic vehicle-bicycle collision that claimed the life of a teenage boy.

According to a statement released by the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Wooster Post, the deadly crash occurred on Smithville Western Rd near Ogden Rd in Chester Township, located in Wayne County. The incident was reported around the afternoon hours on December 2.

Authorities stated that a 2023 Ram 1500, driven by 30-year-old Robert R. Ross of Ashland, was heading eastbound on Smithville Western Rd when it struck a 14-year-old boy who was also traveling eastbound on a bicycle. The impact caused both the teen and the bicycle to veer off the north side of the road.

First responders, including paramedics, assessed the injured teen at the scene and transported him to Wooster Community Hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased. Officials confirmed that Ross remained at the scene and did not sustain any injuries.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office assisted alongside Accelerate Towing and Recovery and OSHP in clearing the area and launching an investigation. At this time, drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be contributing factors. The crash remains under active investigation.

Our thoughts are with the family and community affected by this heartbreaking loss.

Bicycle Accidents in Ohio

This fatal collision in Chester Township underscores the grave risks that cyclists can face, even on seemingly quiet rural roads. The accident involved a teenager navigating alongside vehicle traffic, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ensuring safe, shared roadway use.

Ohio’s traffic laws classify bicycles as vehicles, meaning cyclists are permitted to travel in the same lanes as cars. However, without dedicated bike lanes or adequate shoulder space—as is common on roads like Smithville Western Rd—cyclists remain highly vulnerable. In this incident, the eastbound cyclist and driver were traveling in the same direction, with no evidence of erratic behavior or impairment. Still, the results were devastating.

The loss of a young life has a ripple effect throughout the community. In towns like Wooster and Chester Township, where families often rely on bikes for recreation or local travel, such tragedies raise important conversations about safety improvements. Whether through better signage, lower speed limits in mixed-use areas, or infrastructure changes such as widened shoulders, each fatality must serve as a wake-up call.

For those mourning a loss or recovering from serious injuries, it’s also important to know that support systems exist. Navigating insurance claims, medical expenses, and legal proceedings can feel overwhelming. Local organizations and legal professionals experienced in traffic-related injuries can help provide clarity and guidance during difficult times.

As the OSHP continues its investigation, community members are reminded to stay alert on all roadways—particularly when sharing space with pedestrians, cyclists, or children. Proactive awareness can prevent future tragedies and save lives.
