Washington County, VA (January 12, 2026) – A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning in Washington County when a driver was killed after crashing into a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 81.
The deadly collision occurred just after 6 a.m. along the northbound lanes of I-81, near mile marker 31. Authorities with Virginia State Police reported that an SUV was traveling north when it struck a tractor-trailer that had become disabled and was stationary in the right travel lane.
Fire crews and paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes and worked quickly to assess the situation. Despite their efforts, the driver of the SUV succumbed to their injuries at the scene. No other injuries were reported in connection to the crash.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased, as next-of-kin notification is pending. Investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the tractor-trailer was immobilized and whether the appropriate hazard indicators were deployed.
Traffic along the affected stretch of I-81 was impacted for several hours as investigators documented the scene and cleared debris. Further updates are expected as the Virginia State Police continue their investigation.
