Jefferson Co, MO (January 14, 2026) – A chain-reaction crash involving eight vehicles left at least two people injured early Tuesday morning on northbound Interstate 55 just south of Missouri Z.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. amid heavy traffic conditions. According to officials, a 2025 Ford Escape had slowed due to congestion when it was struck from behind by a 2017 Chevrolet Express van. This initial impact triggered a domino effect involving several other vehicles, including a GMC Yukon, a Mercedes-Benz Metis, and a Toyota Corolla.
Paramedics from the Joachim Plattin Ambulance District responded swiftly, transporting two drivers — a 22-year-old woman from Washington, MO, and a 24-year-old woman from Festus, MO — to Mercy Hospital Jefferson with injuries. Emergency personnel from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Pevely Police Department assisted with the scene and traffic control.
Several vehicles, including the Toyota Corolla, Kia Telluride, and Chevrolet Express, were declared total losses and towed from the site by McCain’s Towing. Others sustained varying levels of damage but were able to be driven from the scene.
Authorities confirmed that all drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. While the precise cause remains under investigation, the congested roadway and potential following distance issues are believed to have played a role in the collision.
We extend our best wishes to those recovering from their injuries and thank all the first responders for their prompt assistance.
