Lancaster County, NE (January 20, 2026) – A tragic two-vehicle crash Thursday morning east of Waverly claimed one life and left another person seriously injured, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:14 a.m. at the intersection of North 162nd Street and Bluff Road. Authorities say a southbound Lancaster County Engineering Department dump truck failed to stop at a posted stop sign and struck a westbound red vehicle.
The impact of the crash pushed the red vehicle through the intersection and into a nearby ditch. The driver of the red vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the same vehicle sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Additionally, a dog in the vehicle was taken to a local animal clinic in Waverly.
The dump truck driver, who was reportedly spreading gravel prior to the collision, is cooperating fully with investigators, according to Capt. John Vik. The crash occurred during a period of reduced visibility, and a dense fog advisory had been extended until noon by the Lincoln-Lancaster Emergency Management Agency.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash, including the possible role of weather and the reported stop sign violation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim and wish the injured passenger a full and swift recovery.
