Franklin Co, MO (January 25, 2026) – A two-vehicle accident on Interstate 44 Friday afternoon resulted in injuries to two people and caused significant traffic delays near the 256 mile marker.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:55 p.m. on January 24 in the eastbound lanes of I-44. According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2025 Toyota RAV4 swerved to avoid a nearby tractor-trailer and lost control. As the RAV4 came to an abrupt halt or slowed unexpectedly, it was struck from behind by an eastbound Lincoln SUV.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene by Big Boys Towing. Emergency crews from Meramec EMS responded quickly and transported two individuals to Mercy Hospital in Washington with injuries. A 42-year-old male driver from St. Louis and a 47-year-old female occupant also from St. Louis were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Traffic flow was temporarily disrupted while authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the chain of events. Fortunately, no major lane closures were reported beyond the initial response period.
The incident is under investigation by troopers from MSHP Troop C. While driver avoidance contributed to the initial loss of control, authorities are also reviewing factors such as vehicle speed and spacing between the cars involved.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we hope for their prompt and full recovery.
