Costa Mesa, CA (January 30, 2026) – A deadly collision involving a white minivan and a Caltrans work vehicle occurred late Thursday night on southbound Interstate 405 just north of the MacArthur Blvd off-ramp in Costa Mesa, according to California Highway Patrol logs.
The crash was reported at approximately 10:42 p.m. Witnesses stated the minivan was traveling at high speeds before striking the Caltrans vehicle, which was part of an active roadway operation. The force of the impact left debris scattered across several lanes and triggered a full emergency response.
Authorities confirmed that at least one person died in the collision. The Orange County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene, and a SigAlert was issued shortly after 11:00 p.m. for lanes #2 through #6 on southbound I-405 and the southbound SR-55 transition to I-405, both of which remained closed for an extended investigation and cleanup.
The white SUV and gray Toyota Prius involved were later removed by tow services, and Caltrans crews assisted in lane closures and scene safety. CHP continues to investigate whether speed or reckless driving was a factor, as indicated by preliminary reports.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic accident.
