Why Disabled Commercial Trucks on Highways Can Be So Dangerous
Disabled commercial vehicles can create serious hazards, especially on rural highways. When large trucks stop in travel lanes, drivers approaching at normal highway speeds may have little time to react. Visibility can also be limited by curves, hills, or weather conditions.
Log trailers and other heavy cargo equipment present additional risks because of their size and structure. If not clearly visible or properly marked, parts of the trailer can extend into travel lanes. Even a brief delay in braking or steering can lead to severe outcomes.
Highway safety guidelines encourage truck operators to use warning devices such as hazard lights and reflective triangles when stopped. Drivers should remain alert on open highways, reduce speed when visibility changes, and scan ahead for unexpected obstacles in the roadway.
