What Makes Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes So Dangerous?
High-speed highways like Florida’s Turnpike carry steady traffic throughout the day. When a crash happens in active lanes, nearby drivers may have limited time to react. This can lead to chain-reaction collisions involving several vehicles.
Overpasses and elevated sections of roadway can add another layer of risk. Barriers may restrict escape paths, and debris can spread across multiple lanes. When crashes affect traffic in both directions, congestion can build quickly and increase the chance of secondary collisions.
In multi-vehicle incidents, emergency crews must assess several drivers and passengers at once. Clearing damaged vehicles and restoring safe traffic flow can take time, especially on major travel routes like the Turnpike in Broward County.
