Jacksonville, FL (January 21, 2026) – A motorcyclist was killed, and two others were seriously hurt in a rear-end crash on Jacksonville’s Northside. The collision happened just after midnight on February 21 at the intersection of US-17 and New Berlin Rd.
According to reports, a 32-year-old man from Jonesboro, Georgia, was riding northbound on US-17 at a high rate of speed. Two sedans were stopped at a red light in the northbound lanes at New Berlin Rd when the motorcycle struck the rear of one of the cars.
The impact pushed the first sedan into a second sedan that was also stopped at the light. All three vehicles moved forward a short distance before coming to rest, blocking the northbound lanes of US-17 and the intersection.
The drivers of the sedans, a 65-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, both from Jacksonville, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Rear-End Motorcycle Crashes Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Motorcycle crashes at intersections often result in serious or fatal injuries. Unlike drivers inside passenger vehicles, riders do not have the protection of a metal frame, airbags, or seat belts. Even at moderate speeds, a direct rear impact can throw a rider from the bike.
Intersections controlled by traffic lights can increase risk, especially when vehicles are stopped. A sudden failure to slow down may leave little room to avoid a collision. When multiple vehicles are lined up, a chain reaction crash can occur, leading to injuries for several people.
Nighttime conditions can also reduce visibility and reaction time. Street lighting, signal timing, and traffic flow all influence how safely vehicles move through busy areas like US-17 and New Berlin Rd.
