Belle Glade, FL (January 21, 2026) – On Friday, a Lakeland man was killed, and his passenger was seriously hurt after their car crashed into a semi on US-27 in Belle Glade. The collision occurred on February 20 along the southbound lanes of the highway.
According to reports, a Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound behind a tractor-trailer in the outside lane. For reasons still unclear, the driver of the Hyundai did not realize he was in the same lane as the semi and struck the rear of the truck.
The impact caused the Hyundai to rotate clockwise before coming to rest on the left shoulder of the roadway. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Julius Brown Jr. of Lakeland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger was taken to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the semi was not hurt in the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Happens in Rear-End Crashes Involving Semi Trucks?
Rear-end crashes involving large tractor-trailers often result in severe damage to smaller vehicles. Semi trucks sit higher off the ground, which can cause the front of a car to slide beneath the trailer during impact. This type of crash can lead to serious or fatal injuries for those inside the passenger vehicle.
Highways like US-27 carry a mix of commercial and local traffic. Differences in vehicle size and stopping distance can increase risk, especially when cars follow large trucks too closely. Sudden slowdowns or limited visibility may also contribute to these incidents.
After a collision, vehicle damage patterns and roadway positioning are typically reviewed to better understand how the crash occurred. These factors help clarify the sequence of events in serious highway accidents.
