Wilmington, DE (February 24, 2026) – New details have been released following a fatal head-on crash previously reported on Interstate 95 near Harvey Road. Authorities have now identified the victim as 19-year-old Unique Williams of Newark.
The crash occurred on Friday, February 20, at around 9 p.m., when a Chrysler 200 traveling southbound crossed the grass median and entered the oncoming lanes. The vehicle then collided head-on with a Volvo truck-tractor hauling a trailer loaded with cars.
Williams was ejected from the vehicle and taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Officials reported that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The truck driver, a 34-year-old man from New York, was also injured and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No additional updates on his condition have been released.
Emergency units had responded to the scene and worked to assist those involved while clearing the roadway. Further details about what led to the vehicle crossing the median have not yet been confirmed.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Median Crossovers Can Lead to Serious Crashes in Delaware
Median crossovers often result in head-on crashes, which are among the most severe types of roadway incidents. When a vehicle crosses into opposing traffic at highway speeds, the force of impact can be extreme due to the combined speed of both vehicles.
Several factors can cause a vehicle to leave its lane and cross a median. Driver fatigue, distraction, or sudden steering movements may all contribute. In some cases, road conditions or mechanical problems can also play a part in a vehicle losing control.
Highways like I-95 are designed with medians to separate traffic, but not all medians prevent crossover incidents. Grass medians, in particular, may not stop a vehicle from entering oncoming lanes. Staying alert and maintaining control of the vehicle can help reduce the risk of these dangerous crashes.
