Why Red-Light Crashes at Urban Intersections Can Lead to Severe Injuries
Crashes that happen when a vehicle enters an intersection against a red signal often involve side impacts. These collisions can be especially dangerous because the side of a vehicle offers less protection than the front or rear.
Busy city intersections also have multiple lanes, turning traffic, and pedestrians nearby. This increases the chance of a high-force crash when signals are ignored or misjudged.
Investigators often review signal timing, vehicle damage, and the final resting positions of the vehicles to understand how the impact occurred. Traffic flow and visibility at the time of the crash may also provide helpful context.
