Why Entrapment Complicates Emergency Response After a Crash
Entrapment occurs when crash damage traps a person inside a vehicle, making it difficult to remove them safely. In these cases, emergency crews use specialized tools to cut through metal, remove doors, or lift parts of the vehicle.
The process requires careful coordination to prevent further injury, especially when a patient is unconscious or critically hurt. Stabilizing the vehicle and protecting the patient’s head and spine are top priorities during extrication.
Weather conditions can also affect emergency response. Poor visibility or low cloud cover may prevent air transport, requiring ground ambulances to handle long-distance transfers. Quick extrication and transport remain key factors in improving outcomes for seriously injured patients.
