Why Failure to Yield Is a Common Cause of Intersection Crashes
Failure to yield occurs when a driver fails to allow another vehicle with the right of way to proceed safely. This often occurs during left turns at intersections, where drivers must judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic.
Misjudging gaps in traffic or rushing to complete a turn can increase crash risk. Police vehicles and other drivers can be especially vulnerable when traveling through intersections with limited reaction time.
Clear visibility, patience, and following traffic rules can help reduce these types of crashes. Paying close attention to approaching vehicles helps drivers make safer turning decisions.
