What Drivers and Pedestrians Should Know About Roadway Crossing Risks
Pedestrian accidents often happen when people cross roads outside of marked crosswalks or in areas with steady traffic. Drivers may have limited time to react, especially at night or in poorly lit areas. Even at moderate speeds, a vehicle can cause serious injuries to someone on foot.
Visibility affects both drivers and pedestrians. Dark clothing, poor lighting, and parked vehicles can make it harder to see someone crossing. Drivers who stay alert and reduce speed in busy areas can help lower the risk.
Pedestrians can improve safety by crossing at marked locations and watching for approaching vehicles. Making eye contact with drivers and avoiding sudden movements into traffic can also reduce the chance of a crash.
