Sedgwick County, KS (February 26, 2026) – One person was hurt in a rear-end crash on Wednesday, February 25, along northbound Interstate 135 near mile marker 14 at 61st Street in Sedgwick County.
The collision happened around 4:45 p.m. as traffic slowed in the left lane. A 2026 Toyota Prius began braking for congestion ahead when a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling behind it failed to stop and struck the rear of the Prius.
The driver of the Prius, 49-year-old Melissa R. Zieammermann of Marion, was taken to Newton Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep, 15-year-old Cooper J. Bartlett of Hesston, along with passengers Kelli S. Bartlett, 44, and Marley H. Bartlett, 11, were not reported hurt.
The crash remains under investigation. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Do Rear-End Crashes Happen on Busy Highways?
Rear-end crashes are common on highways where traffic volume changes quickly. When congestion builds, drivers may have only seconds to react to slowing vehicles ahead. If a driver is following too closely, even a brief delay in braking can lead to a collision.
High-speed roads increase stopping distance, especially during peak travel times. Larger vehicles also require more space to slow safely. Sudden lane changes or stop-and-go traffic can further reduce reaction time.
Keeping a safe following distance and watching traffic patterns ahead can help reduce the risk. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert in congested areas, particularly near exits and major intersections where traffic flow often shifts.
