St. Clair Shores, MI (February 26, 2026) – A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash on I-94 in St. Clair Shores early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred just after 1:10 a.m. near the Shady Lane pedestrian bridge, close to Nine Mile Rd.
Emergency units responded to reports of a woman in the roadway on the westbound side of the freeway. When officers arrived, they found the woman deceased at the scene. Authorities believe she was struck by a driver who left the area before help arrived.
An SUV was also found crashed on an embankment near a retaining wall. Officials said that the vehicle was not connected to the hit-and-run and did not release further details.
The victim has not been publicly identified, though her family has been notified. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Pedestrian Crashes on Freeways Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on freeways are especially dangerous because vehicles travel at high speeds. Drivers may have little time to react when a person is in the roadway, particularly at night. Limited lighting can make it harder to see someone ahead.
Freeways are designed for continuous vehicle movement, not pedestrian traffic. Barriers, embankments, and multiple lanes can create additional hazards. A person on foot in these areas faces a much higher risk of severe injury or death.
Drivers who remain alert and focused can help reduce risk, especially in low-light conditions. Staying attentive and watching for unexpected hazards can help prevent tragic outcomes.
