What Factors Contribute to Head-on Collisions?
Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of roadway accidents. They often happen when a vehicle crosses the center line or travels the wrong way into oncoming traffic. Because both vehicles may be moving at speed, the force of impact can be extreme.
Two-lane highways and rural roads can carry added risk, especially where there are limited barriers separating opposing traffic. Curves, poor visibility, and driver distraction may also increase the chance of a direct collision.
Large trucks involved in head-on crashes can cause significant damage due to their size and weight. The difference in vehicle mass often leads to serious or fatal outcomes for those in smaller passenger vehicles.
