Kent County, MI (February 27, 2026) – Two people were injured after a suspected impaired driver caused a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday, February 26, on M-37 near Casnovia. Emergency units responded to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Officials said a 35-year-old Casnovia man was driving northbound when he rear-ended another vehicle. The impact forced the struck vehicle off the roadway, where it hit a tree and rolled over. The driver continued traveling and then crashed into a second vehicle driven by a 26-year-old woman from Grand Rapids.
The suspected driver suffered serious injuries, including multiple broken bones, and was taken to a hospital. The driver of the first vehicle, a 59-year-old Grand Rapids man, was also hospitalized with multiple broken bones. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and they continue to investigate the incident. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Impaired Driving Increases the Risk of Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Alcohol can affect a driver’s ability to react quickly and control a vehicle. Slower reaction times and poor judgment increase the chance of rear-end collisions and other serious crashes. Drivers under the influence may also fail to stop after an initial impact.
When a vehicle is struck from behind at higher speeds, it can leave the roadway or overturn. This can result in severe injuries, especially if the vehicle hits fixed objects like trees.
Impaired driving can also lead to secondary collisions with other vehicles nearby. Staying alert, driving sober, and maintaining safe distances can help reduce the risk of multi-vehicle crashes.
