Allen County, IN (March 1, 2026) – One person was killed, and two others were seriously injured on Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash at an intersection in west Allen County.
Deputies with the Allen County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of O’Day Road and West Washington Center Road at approximately 4:05 p.m. following reports of a serious collision. According to a department press release, the crash involved a concrete pump truck, a silver passenger car, and a red pickup truck.
Preliminary findings indicate that the silver passenger car was traveling southbound on O’Day Road and approached the intersection at West Washington Center Road. Authorities said the driver stopped briefly at the posted stop sign but entered the intersection as the concrete pump truck was approaching from the east.
Investigators reported that the driver of the pump truck was unable to stop in time and swerved in an attempt to avoid the car. The truck struck the passenger side of the silver car and then collided head-on with a red pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the red pickup truck was pronounced dead; meanwhile, the driver and passenger of the silver car sustained serious injuries. Officials stated that the driver of the car is now in stable condition, while the passenger remains in life-threatening condition.
Road closures were implemented in the area while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and wish the injured individuals a full recovery.
Why Do Crashes Involving Heavy Commercial Vehicles End in Severe Outcomes?
Collisions at rural or semi-rural intersections can present heightened risks, particularly when large commercial vehicles such as concrete pump trucks are involved. Due to their substantial weight and extended stopping distances, heavy trucks may be unable to halt quickly when another vehicle enters the intersection.
T-bone impacts and secondary head-on collisions, as described in this case, often produce severe or fatal injuries due to the force transfer between vehicles of unequal mass. Investigators will typically assess right-of-way compliance, stopping distance calculations, sightlines, and vehicle speed when reconstructing such incidents.
Road closures following serious crashes allow for detailed scene documentation, including measurements, debris mapping, and electronic data retrieval where applicable.
