Why Vehicles Sometimes Leave the Road on Rural Highways
Single-vehicle crashes often occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes a fixed object such as a tree, pole, or ditch. These incidents are common on rural highways where roads may have narrow shoulders and limited barriers between the roadway and nearby hazards.
Several factors can lead a vehicle to drift or exit the road. Driver distraction, sudden steering corrections, speeding, or losing control on curves may all contribute. Road conditions such as wet pavement, loose gravel, or uneven surfaces can also affect how well a vehicle maintains traction.
When a vehicle leaves the road at higher speeds, the risk of serious harm increases. Fixed objects like trees do not move during impact, which can cause significant damage to the vehicle. Safety features like seat belts and airbags help reduce harm, but the force of impact in these crashes can still be severe.
