West Baton Rouge Parish, LA (March 4, 2026) — A 51-year-old Albany man died early on Tuesday morning, March 3, after his box truck rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Interstate 10 East near milepost 147. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. in West Baton Rouge Parish.
State police said Phillip Scott was driving eastbound when traffic was stopped due to construction. For reasons still under investigation, Scott’s truck struck the back of a tractor-trailer. Scott suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in Scott’s truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured. Authorities said impairment is not suspected, but routine toxicology tests will be conducted.
The crash temporarily closed Interstate 10 East past Grosse Tete, but all lanes have since reopened.
Officials continue to investigate the crash, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Phillip Scott.
How Rear-End Crashes Happen on Highways
Rear-end collisions on highways often occur when one vehicle is unable to stop in time for slowing or stopped traffic ahead. High-speed roadways, such as interstates, give drivers little time to react if traffic suddenly slows due to construction or other delays.
Truck drivers face additional challenges because large vehicles require longer distances to stop safely. Factors such as following distance, weather, visibility, and distraction can influence whether a collision occurs. Even when impairment is not involved, the size and speed of commercial vehicles can make these crashes especially dangerous.
Passengers in rear-end crashes may suffer injuries due to sudden deceleration, impact with interior surfaces, or being thrown forward. Wearing seat belts can reduce the severity of injuries in these situations.
