Center Line Crossovers Are a Leading Cause of Severe Head-on Collisions
Crashes involving vehicles that cross the center line are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents. When opposing vehicles collide head-on or at offset angles, the combined force of both vehicles’ speeds can result in devastating injuries.
Two-lane roadways, such as sections of Centerville Turnpike, can be particularly vulnerable to these types of incidents because opposing traffic flows are separated only by painted lane markings rather than physical barriers.
Investigators typically review several potential factors when a vehicle crosses the center line, including driver distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, speeding, and impaired driving. Weather conditions, roadway curvature, and visibility may also be examined during the investigation.
Accident reconstruction specialists often analyze vehicle damage, roadway markings, and witness statements to determine how the collision unfolded. These findings help authorities understand the cause of the crash and determine whether enforcement actions or roadway safety improvements may be necessary.
