Livonia, MI (March 5, 2026) – A 21-year-old man from Plymouth lost his life early on Thursday, March 5, following a collision with a semi-truck on Interstate 275 in Livonia.
Emergency units responded to the southbound lanes of I-275 near Eight Mile Rd shortly before 4 a.m. after reports of a serious crash. Authorities said the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro lost control of the vehicle while traveling on the freeway during rainy conditions.
Investigators believe the car lost control because the driver was going too fast on the wet road. The Camaro was then struck by a semi-truck and became lodged underneath the front of the larger vehicle. The truck driver was not injured in the incident.
The crash led to a partial freeway closure for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage and investigated the scene. By around 8:15 a.m., two lanes had reopened as cleanup operations continued.
Officials reported no signs that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, and continue to investigate the cause of the crash. More details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Wet Road Conditions Increase the Risk of Highway Crashes
Rain can quickly change driving conditions, especially on high-speed roadways like interstates and freeways. Water on the road reduces tire traction, making it easier for vehicles to slide or spin when drivers brake suddenly or steer sharply.
Hydroplaning can also occur when a layer of water forms between the tires and the pavement. When this happens, drivers may temporarily lose control of steering or braking. Even experienced drivers can struggle to regain control once a vehicle begins to slide at highway speeds.
Weather conditions can also affect visibility and increase stopping distances. Vehicles traveling too fast for the wet conditions may be unable to avoid hazards ahead, leading to sudden crashes with nearby vehicles.
