Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur Along Busy Commercial Roads
Pedestrian crashes frequently occur along commercial corridors where businesses, parking lots, and busy roadways are clustered. These areas often attract steady vehicle traffic and people walking between stores, restaurants, and nearby neighborhoods.
Many commercial roads are designed mainly for vehicle travel, with wide lanes and limited pedestrian paths. When sidewalks or designated crossings are not available, people may walk along the shoulder or cross the road at unmarked locations.
Traffic volume can also increase the risk in these environments. Drivers may focus on entering or exiting parking lots while pedestrians move between buildings or across the roadway. These combined movements can create situations in which drivers and pedestrians encounter each other with little time to react.
