Why Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes Can Escalate Quickly
Major highways like Interstate 805 often carry large volumes of traffic at higher speeds than city streets. When a crash occurs in these conditions, nearby vehicles may have little time to slow down or avoid the scene, increasing the chance of additional collisions.
Impacts with barriers or center dividers can also lead to severe damage. When a vehicle strikes these structures, the force of the crash may cause it to spin or stop abruptly, creating hazards for approaching traffic.
Vehicle fires sometimes occur after serious freeway crashes. Fuel leaks, engine damage, or electrical system failures can ignite after impact, especially when the collision causes significant structural damage to a vehicle.
