Kaufman County, TX (March 12, 2026) – A major crash involving multiple vehicles, including an 18-wheeler, shut down a section of Highway 80 on Thursday morning in Kaufman County after several vehicles caught fire.
Emergency crews responded to the collision around 8:00 a.m. along U.S. Highway 80 near Helms Trail, east of Forney, Texas, and close to the Windmill Farms area.
According to preliminary reports, the crash involved several vehicles, including an 18-wheeler, a sport utility vehicle, and a passenger sedan. Investigators believe at least two of the vehicles collided head-on along the eastbound lanes of the highway.
Authorities reported that at least two vehicles caught fire following the impact, prompting a large emergency response as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and assist those involved. Due to the severity of the crash, all eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 80 were closed while emergency personnel secured the scene and began clearing the roadway.

We hope for the safety and recovery of everyone affected by this serious incident.
How Do Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes Lead to Vehicle Fires?
Severe highway crashes involving multiple vehicles can sometimes lead to fires due to fuel leaks, electrical damage, or intense heat generated during the collision.
When large commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers are involved, the force of impact can significantly damage fuel systems in nearby vehicles. This increases the risk of ignition if fuel comes into contact with hot engine components or sparks created during the crash.
Busy corridors like U.S. Highway 80 often carry a mix of passenger vehicles and heavy commercial trucks. Investigators will typically analyze vehicle positioning, fire patterns, and roadway evidence to determine how the collision and subsequent fires occurred.
