What Can Happen When Drivers Attempt to Pass on Two-Lane Highways?
Passing another vehicle on a two-lane highway can present several risks, particularly when traffic is moving in both directions. Drivers must judge distance, speed, and visibility before moving into the opposite lane.
Limited sight distance is one of the main hazards. Curves, hills, and roadside vegetation can reduce a driver’s view of oncoming vehicles, making it harder to complete a pass safely.
Speed differences between vehicles may also affect how quickly a pass can be completed. If the maneuver takes longer than expected, both vehicles may end up too close to each other or to approaching traffic.
Road conditions, traffic flow, and driver timing all influence whether a passing maneuver can be completed without incident. Even a brief miscalculation can lead to a collision involving multiple vehicles traveling in the same direction.
