Why Centerline-Crossing Crashes Often Lead to Severe Outcomes
Roadways such as Kentucky 15 often carry traffic moving in opposite directions without a physical barrier between lanes. When a vehicle crosses the center line, it can place drivers directly in the path of oncoming traffic with little time to avoid a collision.
Head-on crashes are among the most serious types of roadway incidents because both vehicles may be moving at speed when they meet. The impact’s combined force can cause major damage to vehicles and increase the risk of serious injuries.
Several factors can cause a vehicle to drift or cross into an opposing lane. Distractions, fatigue, medical issues, or sudden steering corrections may all contribute to situations where a driver leaves their proper lane of travel.
