Why Seatbelt Use Is Examined After Fatal Crashes
After serious crashes, safety investigators often review whether seatbelts were being used at the time of the collision. Seatbelts are designed to keep occupants secured in their seats during sudden impacts.
When a vehicle stops abruptly during a crash, the body continues moving forward due to momentum. A seatbelt helps distribute the force across stronger parts of the body and prevents a person from striking the dashboard, windshield, or other interior surfaces.
Seatbelts can also reduce the chance of being thrown from the vehicle. Ejection from a car during a crash significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries.
Because of these factors, seatbelt use is often one of the details reviewed by investigators when examining serious or fatal traffic accidents.
