Understanding Factors in Two-Vehicle Crashes at Intersections
Intersections are common locations for collisions because vehicles are often stopping, turning, or accelerating in different directions simultaneously. Impact severity can increase if a vehicle strikes another and then hits a stationary object, such as a wall or tree.
Investigators often review vehicle damage, roadway layout, and traffic control devices to determine how a crash unfolded. Witness statements and video footage, when available, can also help clarify driver actions and vehicle paths.
Even when one vehicle sustains minor damage, occupants of the other vehicle may suffer serious injuries, depending on speed, angle of impact, and use of safety equipment such as seatbelts or airbags.
