Why Pedestrian Accidents Are Especially Dangerous on Freeways
Pedestrians on highways face extreme risk due to high-speed traffic and limited protective barriers. Vehicles traveling at freeway speeds can cause fatal injuries even in brief collisions.
Accidents often occur when a pedestrian is on or near lanes not intended for foot traffic, whether due to distraction, emergency stops, or attempts to cross. Drivers may have little time to react, and visibility can be limited at night or in low-light conditions.
The impact in these crashes typically results in severe trauma because pedestrians have no protection from the vehicle’s force. Highway accidents involving pedestrians are frequently fatal, highlighting the importance of staying off high-speed roadways and of drivers remaining alert to unexpected obstacles.
