Why Left-Turn Crashes with Semi-Trucks Are Especially Dangerous
Crashes involving left turns and large trucks can be particularly severe due to the sheer size, weight, and extended stopping distance of commercial vehicles. These factors make it much harder for truck drivers to react quickly to sudden hazards compared to smaller passenger cars.
When a vehicle fails to yield the right of way, truck drivers may not have enough time or space to slow down or maneuver safely, even if they immediately apply the brakes. In many cases, the angle of a left-turning vehicle can place it directly in the truck’s path, increasing the likelihood of a high-impact collision.
Investigators often review skid marks, vehicle positioning, traffic signal timing, and witness statements to determine how these types of crashes occur. They may also examine onboard data from the truck and nearby surveillance footage to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
