Tulsa, OK (March 30, 2026) – One person lost their life on March 29 after a crash involving an SUV and a fuel truck shut down the westbound lanes of East 51st Street South near South Lewis Avenue in Tulsa. Police said the SUV was traveling west on 51st Street and was approaching the I-44 eastbound on-ramp near South Atlanta Avenue when the collision happened.

According to witnesses, the SUV was moving at a high speed as it neared the intersection. At the same time, a fuel truck traveling east on 51st Street was turning left onto the I-44 eastbound ramp. Investigators believe the truck may have had a protected light, though that detail has not yet been fully confirmed.

Police said the SUV continued through the intersection and struck the rear axle of the fuel truck, causing the semi to roll onto its side. The SUV then spun out before stopping in the roadway. Emergency units rushed to the scene, and the SUV driver was taken to the hospital, where the person later died from their injuries.

The crash remains under review by authorities. We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s loved ones.

What Is Usually Reviewed After a Fatal Crash Involving a Semi Truck?

After a fatal crash involving a large truck, early reviews often focus on vehicle movement, traffic signal timing, and the point of impact. The position of both vehicles after the collision can help show how the crash unfolded, especially when one vehicle rolls over.

Road design is also commonly examined. This may include turn lanes, on-ramp access, traffic flow, and whether visibility was clear for both drivers. Damage to the vehicles, skid marks, and debris patterns can also provide useful context.

When one vehicle is reported to be traveling fast, speed estimates may later be compared with roadway conditions and witness accounts. In crashes involving fuel trucks or other heavy vehicles, the truck’s turning path and balance can also help explain why it tipped onto its side.
