Bremerton, WA (March 30, 2026) – Three people were injured early Monday morning in a series of crashes on Highway 3 in Bremerton.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the initial crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. when a motorcycle operated by a 49-year-old man from Gig Harbor was traveling northbound and struck a patch of black ice on an overpass near Kitsap Way. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, lost control and crashed.
Two drivers traveling in the same direction stopped on the shoulder to assist the motorcyclist. Shortly afterward, a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 61-year-old Gig Harbor man encountered the same icy conditions, lost control, and crashed into the motorcycle, which was positioned on the shoulder.
The impact pushed the motorcycle into the rider and the two Good Samaritans who had stopped to help. All three individuals, including the motorcyclist and the two men from Port Orchard, were transported by ambulance to St. Michael Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities reported that speed may have been a contributing factor in the crashes. The motorcycle sustained significant damage and was declared a total loss.
The incident remains under investigation as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the collisions.
We wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured in this incident.
Icy Road Conditions Can Lead to Dangerous Chain-Reaction Crashes
Black ice is one of the most hazardous conditions drivers can encounter because it is often difficult to see. When vehicles unexpectedly lose traction, it can result in sudden loss of control and crashes.
These conditions become even more dangerous when multiple vehicles are involved, especially if others stop to assist. Secondary crashes can occur when approaching drivers are unable to react in time to hazards ahead.
Reducing speed and maintaining extra distance during cold weather conditions can help minimize the risk of losing control and prevent chain-reaction collisions.
