How Extrication Can Affect Response Times in Crashes
Extrication is needed when a person is trapped inside a vehicle due to damage from a collision. Firefighters use specialized tools to remove doors, roofs, or other parts of the vehicle to safely free occupants without worsening injuries.
These situations often take longer than standard vehicle responses because crews must work carefully to avoid additional harm. Traffic may be delayed, and multiple emergency units are usually required to coordinate patient care, scene safety, and traffic control. Even minor crashes can become complex when extrication is necessary.
