Vernon, CT – Truck Driver Killed in Crash on I-84 East Near Exit 67
Vernon, CT (April 17, 2026) – A truck driver was killed late Wednesday, April 15, after a crash involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 84 East in Vernon.
The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. when a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound. At the same time, a Volvo tractor-trailer was parked on the right shoulder about one mile before Exit 67.
Authorities reported that the Freightliner moved onto the shoulder and struck the parked Volvo. The impact caused the Freightliner to catch fire shortly after the collision.
The driver of the Freightliner was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volvo was not injured and declined medical care. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending confirmation by the medical examiner.
A section of Interstate 84 East between Exits 66 and 67 was partially closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Factors Can Lead to Shoulder Collisions on Highways?
Highway shoulder crashes often happen when a vehicle drifts out of its travel lane. This can occur due to fatigue, distraction, or sudden mechanical problems that affect control.
At night, visibility is reduced, making it harder to detect vehicles stopped on the shoulder. Parked trucks may have lights on, but they can still be difficult to see from a distance, especially at highway speeds.
The size and weight of tractor-trailers also increase the force of impact during a crash. When one truck strikes a stationary truck, the result can be severe damage and an increased risk of fire due to fuel systems and heat generated during the collision.
