Why Semi and Car Crashes Often Cause Severe Harm
Crashes involving semis and passenger cars can be especially serious because of the size difference between the vehicles. A large truck can weigh far more than a car, which can increase the force of impact.
Intersection crashes may also be severe when one vehicle is crossing traffic, and another fails to stop. At rural intersections, drivers might have fewer visual cues than they would on busier city roads.
Road closures are common after major semi crashes. Crews may need time to help injured people, remove damaged vehicles, and clear debris. These steps can take several hours when a fatal crash occurs, and the roadway must remain controlled.
