What Factors Can Affect Bicycle Safety on Rural Highways?
Bicycle safety on rural highways can be affected by several conditions, including lighting, road design, and traffic speed. Many rural roads have limited shoulder space, which can place cyclists closer to moving vehicles. At night, reduced visibility may also make it harder for drivers to see bicycles, especially if reflective gear or lights are not used.
Traffic flow is another factor, as highways often carry faster-moving vehicles. This can shorten reaction time for both drivers and cyclists. Intersections and turns can also create risk, particularly when vehicles and bicycles are traveling in the same direction. Awareness from both road users and proper safety measures can help reduce the chances of serious incidents.
