Why Rural Highway Intersections Are Among the Most Dangerous Crossings on the Road
Crashes at rural highway intersections often occur when vehicles cross high-speed traffic without enough time to clear the roadway. Drivers traveling on divided highways like U.S. routes may not always expect crossing traffic, which can increase the risk of side-impact collisions.
When two vehicles collide at or near an intersection, the force of impact varies depending on speed and direction. Side impacts are especially dangerous because there is less structural protection on the sides of vehicles compared to the front or rear.
Rural intersections may also have limited traffic control signals or longer sight distances, which can make judging speed and distance more difficult. Investigators typically examine roadway layout, vehicle paths, signal timing, and driver behavior to reconstruct how these crashes occur, looking at factors such as obstructed sightlines, posted speed limits, skid marks, and whether any traffic controls were ignored or malfunctioned at the time of the collision.
