How Does Speed Contribute to Fatal Urban Crashes?
Speed plays a critical role in the severity of crashes, particularly on busy urban roads like Westheimer Road. When a driver is unable to control their speed, the risk of losing control of the vehicle or failing to react in time to changing traffic conditions increases significantly.
High speeds reduce the amount of time a driver has to respond to hazards, such as slowing vehicles, traffic signals, or turns. In the event of a collision, the force of impact is also much greater, which can lead to more serious or fatal injuries.
Urban roads often have a mix of traffic signals, intersections, and varying traffic patterns. Maintaining a safe and controlled speed allows drivers to better navigate these conditions and helps reduce the likelihood of severe crashes.
