Prairie Grove, IL (July 16, 2026) – Three people were hospitalized following a three-vehicle collision at Route 31 and Gracy Road on Wednesday afternoon, July 15. Emergency units were dispatched at approximately 2:32 p.m.

Crews found three vehicles with moderate to heavy damage. A small work truck had entered a nearby ditch, leaving its driver trapped inside. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and safely freed the motorist.

The work-truck driver and another adult occupant were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. A woman driving an SUV was also hospitalized with moderate injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. The third driver declined further medical attention after evaluation.

Route 31 remained closed for about 90 minutes before reopening around 4 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under review. We wish everyone a speedy recovery.

Why Entrapment Complicates Multi-Vehicle Rescue Work

When someone becomes trapped after a wreck, crews must prevent the damaged vehicle from shifting before beginning removal work. A car or truck resting in a ditch may sit at an unstable angle, making careful stabilization especially important.

Rescue teams may remove doors, adjust seats, or create additional space around the occupant. Medical care often continues throughout the process, while other personnel assess passengers and manage hazards involving the remaining vehicles.

Vehicle positions, damage patterns, tire marks, and debris may help clarify the order of contact. Road design, sight distance, turning movements, and available video can provide further context. These details also explain why complex rescue operations may require extended road closures.
